Smartsheet Report Source Sheets

Smartsheet reports aggregate rows from one or more source sheets, but the report interface does not show which sheets are feeding data into the report. When a report returns unexpected rows, is missing data, or needs to be audited, users must open the report settings or navigate through their workspace to figure out which source sheets are involved.

Without Grid Tools

The daily workaround

Source sheets not visible in report
There is no indicator in the report view showing which sheets are contributing rows to the report.
Open report settings to find sources
Identifying source sheets requires navigating into the report's configuration panel rather than seeing them at a glance.
Manual navigation to each source sheet
After identifying a source sheet, users must locate and open it separately through search or the workspace browser.
Troubleshooting takes multiple steps
Diagnosing a missing row or unexpected result means bouncing between the report and multiple source sheets without a direct link.

With Grid Tools

How Grid Tools handles it

Source sheets listed in the report
Grid Tools displays the source sheets for the current report directly inside the report interface so you can see them without entering settings.
One-click navigation to any source sheet
Click any source sheet name in the Grid Tools panel to open that sheet directly, without searching for it in the workspace.
Faster report auditing
When a row behaves unexpectedly in a report, jump to the originating source sheet in one step to investigate the underlying data.
Works for multi-source reports
Grid Tools lists all source sheets configured for the report, including reports that pull from dozens of sheets across a workspace.

Frequently asked questions

Does Smartsheet show source sheets inside the report view?

No. Smartsheet shows source sheet configuration only inside the report settings panel, not inline while viewing the report. Grid Tools surfaces this information directly in the report.

How many source sheets can Grid Tools list for a single report?

Grid Tools lists all source sheets configured for the report regardless of how many there are, including large workspace-wide reports with many contributing sheets.

Can I open a source sheet from the Grid Tools panel without losing my place in the report?

Grid Tools opens source sheets in a new browser tab so the report stays open in the original tab.

Is this useful for reports I did not build myself?

Yes. Inherited or shared reports are often opaque about their data sources. Grid Tools lets any user with report access see which sheets are feeding data into it.
