Grid Tools Known Limitations

Grid Tools is a browser extension, which means it can only interact with Smartsheet through the browser's DOM — it cannot access Smartsheet servers, the Smartsheet API, or any part of the interface that isn't rendered in the current browser tab. This page documents what Grid Tools cannot do and why, so you can plan around these boundaries rather than spending time troubleshooting a fundamental constraint.

Without Grid Tools

The daily workaround

Browser extension DOM boundary
Grid Tools reads and modifies what is rendered in your browser tab — it cannot access Smartsheet data that hasn't been loaded into the current page view.
No Smartsheet API access
Grid Tools does not use the Smartsheet REST API, so operations that would require server-side data retrieval — such as reading all rows in a sheet larger than the loaded view — are outside its scope.
Mobile app not supported
Grid Tools runs in Chrome and Firefox on desktop; the Smartsheet iOS and Android apps are separate native applications that browser extensions cannot access.
Smartsheet UI changes break features
When Smartsheet updates its interface markup or class names, Grid Tools features that depend on those elements may stop working until a Grid Tools update restores compatibility.

Grid Tools does not add tools to the Smartsheet home screen, folder views, or account settings pages.
Screenshot: Smartsheet print dialog showing that Grid Tools does not modify the native Smartsheet print view
Grid Tools does not modify the native Smartsheet print dialog — export to PDF via Excel is the supported path.

The Smartsheet desktop app is an Electron wrapper — browser extensions do not run inside it.

How Grid Tools handles it

Compatibility guide documents scope
The compatibility page lists exactly which browsers and Smartsheet view types are supported so you can verify coverage before deploying Grid Tools to a team.
Release notes track UI-break fixes
Each Grid Tools release includes notes on which features were restored after a Smartsheet interface change, giving you a clear signal of when to update the extension.
Known workarounds are documented
For limitations that have practical workarounds — such as working with data that exceeds what Smartsheet has loaded into the grid — those alternatives are described in the relevant feature documentation.
Feature requests address gaps
If a limitation is blocking a critical workflow, the feature request portal is the path to having it evaluated for a future release or a creative within-extension workaround.

Grid Tools operates on what the browser has rendered — it cannot reach data or views that aren't currently loaded.

The Smartsheet iOS and Android apps are outside Grid Tools' reach — it only runs in Chrome and Firefox on desktop.

Frequently asked questions

Can Grid Tools access sheets that I haven't opened in the browser?

No — Grid Tools can only interact with what is rendered in your current browser tab; accessing other sheets, workspaces, or account data requires navigating to those pages in the browser.

Does Grid Tools work with the Smartsheet desktop app?

No — the Smartsheet desktop application is an Electron-based wrapper where browser extensions do not run; Grid Tools requires Chrome or Firefox on the web version of Smartsheet.

Why did a Grid Tools feature stop working after a Smartsheet update?

Grid Tools depends on Smartsheet's rendered DOM structure; when Smartsheet changes element names, layout, or markup, features that target those elements may need an update to Grid Tools to restore functionality.

Are there Smartsheet views that Grid Tools does not support at all?

Grid Tools does not add tools to the Smartsheet home screen, workspace folder views, account administration pages, or the Smartsheet mobile apps — the grid, workflow editor, reports, dashboards, and document generation views are the supported areas.
