Smartsheet Append or Prepend Column Text

Smartsheet provides no bulk column-rename capability. When teams need to standardize column names — adding a project prefix, department tag, date stamp, or version indicator — each column must be renamed one at a time through the header menu. On sheets with many columns, this is repetitive manual work with a high risk of inconsistency.

Without Grid Tools

The daily workaround

Rename each column header manually
Users double-click each column header and type the new prefix or suffix text individually, repeating for every column that needs the change.
Introduce inconsistent formatting
Typing text into each header separately produces minor variations — extra spaces, different capitalisation, or missing hyphens — that break naming conventions.
Re-apply after schema changes
When new columns are added to the sheet, they arrive without the standard prefix or suffix and must be manually renamed to match the convention.
Track progress on a separate list
On wide sheets, users keep a separate note of which columns still need the rename treatment so they do not miss any.

With Grid Tools

How Grid Tools handles it

Add text to the start or end of column names
Enter the text to prepend or append once, and Grid Tools applies it to all selected columns simultaneously.
Consistent across every column
The same string is added to every selected column name in exactly the same way — no typos or spacing variation.
Apply to a subset or all columns
Target specific columns using the column picker or apply to all columns at once, depending on what the naming convention requires.
Preview before committing
Review the resulting column names in a before-and-after preview before the change is applied to the sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Does Smartsheet have a bulk column rename or naming convention tool?

No. Smartsheet requires editing each column name individually. Grid Tools adds bulk append and prepend so you can apply a consistent naming convention to many columns at once.

What is the difference between append and prepend?

Prepend adds text to the beginning of the column name (e.g., turning 'Owner' into 'Q3-Owner'). Append adds text to the end (e.g., turning 'Owner' into 'Owner-Q3').

Can I apply the text addition to only some columns, not all?

Yes. Use the Grid Tools column picker to select a specific subset of columns before running the append or prepend action.

Will renaming columns this way break formulas?

Smartsheet formulas reference columns by name and update when columns are renamed. Grid Tools renames columns through the same mechanism as manual renaming, so the formula-update behavior is identical.
